Malagò confirmed his run for FIGC Presidency

Giovanni Malagò has officially confirmed that he will run for the FIGC Presidency after receiving the endorsement of the Lega Serie B. He stated, “I will file my candidacy tomorrow.” This announcement marks a significant step as he positions himself among two leading candidates, alongside Giancarlo Abete, for the currently vacant role of FIGC President.

Malagò's candidacy comes in the wake of Gabriele Gravina’s resignation from the presidency, which followed Italy's failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in late March. Despite his discussions with representatives from various leagues, including Lega Serie A, Serie B, Serie C, the LND (Amateur Leagues), the players’ association, and the coaches’ association, it was only on Tuesday night that Malagò formally declared his intention to run.

Addressing guests at a charity dinner organized by the Lega Serie A, Malagò confirmed, “I can confirm that tomorrow morning, I will file my candidacy for the presidency of the football federation.” The backing from Lega Serie B adds to his existing support from Lega Serie A, the players’ association, and the coaches’ association, positioning him to likely secure a majority of the electoral votes.

In the upcoming FIGC Presidential election, the voting power of each body is as follows:
- Lega Serie A: 20 delegates, 18% of votes
- Lega Serie B: 20 delegates, 6% of votes
- Lega Pro (Serie C): 57 delegates, 12% of votes
- LND (Amateur Leagues): 99 delegates, 34% of votes
- Players’ association: 52 delegates, 20% of votes
- Coaches’ association: 26 delegates, 10% of votes
