Mercedes Boss Questions Ferrari's Limitless F1 Upgrades

After the Austrian Grand Prix, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff raised concerns about Ferrari's ability to constantly provide significant upgrades to its SF-26 amid the constraints of Formula 1's budget cap. During a season where development expenses are strictly regulated, Wolff expressed surprise at Ferrari's capacity to introduce large updates, noting that their recent enhancements included a new engine specification and revised wing components.
"We're a little bit surprised that Ferrari can throw these huge updates at the car in the way they do," Wolff stated. He indicated that he expected Ferrari to be nearing the limit of its budget, stating, "In my opinion, they need to be running out of money soon, cost cap money, because we can't do that."
Wolff cited Mercedes' own limitations under the budget cap, highlighting that his team lacked the financial flexibility to implement numerous updates like Ferrari. He said, "Hopefully that's going to change towards the end of the season when they won't be able to bring any parts anymore."
Ferrari's developments throughout the season included substantial aerodynamic enhancements, notably during events in Miami and Barcelona. The team introduced sizeable structural changes to the ends of the wings and floor designs as well as an innovative rear wing configuration dubbed the 'Macarena wing', which features a pivoting mechanism that activates during specific driving modes.
Similar upgrades for Ferrari and Audi were made available after the FIA's Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) rankings were concluded following the Monaco Grand Prix. This system allowed manufacturers with underperforming engines to receive extra dyno time and budgetary breaks. In contrast, Wolff noted that Mercedes did not have any engine developments ready at the time, making minor adjustments in Austria instead to improve reliability.
As for other teams like Williams and Aston Martin, the budget cap forced them to utilize existing components longer or plan for a major update later in the season. While Wolff acknowledged that competitors like Red Bull have also made adjustments, he observed that only Ferrari appeared to operate without apparent limitations in terms of updates. "The only ones who are not slowing down are Ferrari," he said, suggesting that they seemed to be on a different trajectory compared to other teams.
