England midfielder Jude Bellingham slapped Argentina substitute Valentin Barco on the back of the head following England's 2-1 defeat in the World Cup semi-final. This incident occurred after the match, as Barco, who did not participate in the game, joined his teammates on the pitch to celebrate.
Bellingham approached Barco, who was hugging fellow players, and slapped him, which led to a small altercation as players from both teams got involved before Bellingham walked away. The motivations behind Bellingham's action remain unclear; however, footage revealed Barco ran onto the pitch to celebrate after Enzo Fernandez scored an equalizer in the 85th minute.
Argentina sealed their victory when Lautaro Martinez found the net in the second minute of stoppage time, bringing an end to England's hopes after they had taken the lead with a goal from Anthony Gordon early in the second half.
At 21, Barco competes for French club Strasbourg and previously played for Brighton. He had limited participation in the tournament, appearing only once as a second-half substitute in Argentina’s 3-1 win against Jordan.
The first half of the high-stakes match in Atlanta was noted for its physicality, with American referee Ismail Elfath officiating 19 fouls. Bellingham had also an earlier exchange with Argentina captain Lionel Messi four minutes in, following a foul committed against England midfielder Elliot Anderson. Bellingham later commented, "We were really just discussing a foul, actually. It wasn’t anything bad. I’m sure everyone will do their thing and make it a big deal, but it was nothing."
Bellingham, who scored six goals throughout the tournament, expressed his disappointment post-match, reflecting the overall sentiments within the England camp after their World Cup exit.
