FIFA Considers Sanctions Against Argentina Post-World Cup Win

FIFA could sanction Argentina following the national team's celebration of their World Cup semi-final victory over England. The Argentine players displayed a banner endorsing the country's claim to the Falkland Islands after their 2-1 win on July 12, 2026, in Atlanta, securing a spot in the final against Spain. The banner read "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" ("The Falklands are Argentine"), a politically charged statement that raises the risk of repercussions from FIFA.

The Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory, are part of an ongoing sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom, a conflict that escalated into the 1982 Falklands War. This war resulted in the deaths of 655 Argentine soldiers, 255 British servicemen, and three Falkland Islanders. FIFA has addressed similar issues before; for instance, in 2014, the Argentine Football Association was fined £20,000 when the team displayed the same banner at an international friendly against Slovenia. FIFA deemed this act a violation of its rules against political expressions and team misconduct.

Argentina's vice president, Victoria Villarruel, stirred further controversy by posting on X after the match, stating, "It wasn't just another match," along with a video that seemed to feature Argentine soldiers. She proclaimed, "The Falklands are Argentine. They banned bringing them to the stadium and forgot that we carry them in our blood and our hearts." Prior to the semi-final, Villarruel described the clash against England as "about putting the invaders in their place."

Moreover, Argentine players had previously drawn attention during their Round of 16 victory over Egypt by singing chants related to the Falkland Islands, as well as honoring football legends Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi. Despite the political flavor surrounding the team's performances, coach Lionel Scaloni asserted before the match that football should remain apolitical. "The reality is that this is a football match. I can't mix things up, especially out of respect for what happened so many years ago. This is a very sad part of our history, and there isn't much we can do about it. We certainly remember those people, but it is a football match. We shouldn't confuse the two."

The semi-final, marked by heightened security due to the historical tensions between Argentina and the United Kingdom, concluded with late goals from Enzo Fernández and Lautaro Martínez.
