In a thrilling encounter, Ireland secured a 36-20 victory over Japan, pushing them to two bonus-point wins in the Nations Championship. The match saw much-changed Irish players thrash the spirited Brave Blossoms in New South Wales. Ireland’s Sean Jansen, making his international debut, scored a try just 10 minutes into the second half. Earlier, Irish tries from Nick Timoney, Tom O'Toole, and Robbie Henshaw set the groundwork for the win.
Japan’s Taira Main opened the scoring early in the match, and full-back Takuro Matsunaga added eight points through penalties to keep Japan within striking distance as they entered halftime trailing by only a converted try.
The Brave Blossoms appeared to rally following a try from replacement prop Hayate Era, narrowing Ireland’s lead just after Jansen's score. However, Harry Byrne added a penalty to extend the Irish lead, followed by a late try from Tom Stewart to seal the deal.
After the match, Ireland’s head coach Andy Farrell expressed relief and satisfaction, acknowledging the challenges posed by a strong Japanese side. He noted that while the score may have flattered Ireland, he was delighted with the result, particularly given the inclusion of four debutants and various changes in the lineup.
Farrell rotated his squad significantly, making nine changes from the previous match against the Wallabies. Among these were Ciaran Frawley’s first start at fly-half and Jansen's debut. Japan made only one change, replacing Kippei Ishida with Taira.
Despite facing early setbacks, such as a missed line-out throw by Ronan Kelleher, Ireland responded effectively. Timoney scored his seventh try after a quick succession of plays from Irish forwards, but Japan surged back into the lead when Matsunaga converted a penalty. O'Toole soon answered back for Ireland, crossing the line for his first Test try.
The match held significant tension, particularly as Japan threatened a comeback, but the Irish defense held firm. With debut introductions for Connacht players Billy Bohan and Sam Illo, and Ulster's Bryn Ward, Ireland substituted key players down the stretch, showcasing their squad depth.
Ireland now heads to Auckland for a much-anticipated showdown against New Zealand, while Japan prepares to host France in Tokyo.
