Jermain Defoe departs Woking after brief managerial stint

Jermain Defoe, the former England striker, left his position as Woking manager after only four months and six league matches. Defoe took over from Neal Ardley in March, achieving two victories in those six games, which led the club to a 10th place finish last season. On Thursday, Woking announced the termination of Defoe's contract after they "mutually agreed to part ways with immediate effect", just two weeks ahead of the new season opener against Sutton United.

In an Instagram post, Defoe explained, "Unfortunately, circumstances have ultimately made it impossible for me to continue in the position. I am extremely proud of the work undertaken during my time at the club and genuinely felt that we were building something special."

Defoe's last game with Woking was a 1-0 defeat against Braintree Town during one of three pre-season friendlies on Tuesday. Prior to this managerial role, Defoe had an illustrious playing career, scoring 305 goals in 763 senior matches for clubs such as West Ham, Tottenham, Portsmouth, and Sunderland before retiring in 2022. He also had 20 goals in 57 appearances for the national team.

In 2021, Defoe was part of an interim coaching staff at Rangers and later worked in the Spurs academy before aiming for a full-time managerial role in 2024. Prior to his departure, Defoe expressed excitement about the upcoming season, making this sudden end to his management role unexpected. The fans had shown enthusiasm towards Defoe's appointment, with many players recruited this summer citing the former striker as a reason for joining Woking.

However, Defoe's thank you message to club owner Todd Johnson, while not mentioning director of football Jody Brown, may hint at underlying issues related to his exit. Despite Defoe's commendable coaching efforts observed during training, speculation suggests off-the-field circumstances contributed to the end of his 116-day managerial tenure. As Woking searches for a new head coach, this period may not be ideal given the approaching kickoff for the new season.
