Rulani Mokwena Set to Depart Al Ittihad
Newsroom
Rulani Mokwena, the former coach of Mamelodi Sundowns and Wydad Club Athletic, looked set to leave the Libyan club Al Ittihad SC after just four months in charge. Mokwena took over in March 2026, when Al Ittihad was unbeaten and sitting at the top of the league log. However, the team encountered difficulties as the season progressed into the playoffs.
The team finished the regular season with three wins and a draw but faced challenges in the playoffs, securing only two wins, two draws, and one defeat. Consequently, Mokwena's side fell out of contention for the CAF inter-club competition spots. As if that wasn’t enough, they also suffered a setback in the Libyan Cup final, losing 2-0 to rivals Al-Ahli Tripoli. This defeat raised questions regarding their prospects for the 2026/27 season.
Prior to joining Al Ittihad, Mokwena was at the helm of the Algerian club MC Alger, where he won the Algerian Super Cup and was leading the Algerian Ligue 1 before his midseason switch to Al Ittihad. After a disappointing end to the 2025/26 campaign, indications from Libya suggested that Mokwena was set to mutually agree to leave his position with the club.
