Stanley Nwabali has returned to Chippa United, as confirmed by the South African Premier Soccer League club. The announcement, made in a brief statement on July 12, 2026, marks the end of months of uncertainty surrounding the future of the 30-year-old goalkeeper who had left Chippa United in February. Nwabali's departure followed impressive performances at the Africa Cup of Nations tournaments in which he played a crucial role, helping Nigeria reach the finals in 2023 and contributing to a strong showing in the 2025 tournament.
After his rising reputation at AFCON, where he gained recognition for his penalty-saving exploits, there were widespread expectations that Nwabali would secure a transfer to a larger club. However, as he approached the end of his contract with Chippa United, he requested to leave, which the club facilitated amicably. Despite his free agent status, Nwabali later realized he had no prior agreement with another club.
Following his exit, Nwabali was rumored to be in talks with several teams, including Raja Casablanca, Al-Ettifaq, and Queens Park Rangers. Although these links generated speculation, none materialized into formal moves. His negotiations with Tanzanian club Simba SC were the most serious but ultimately fell apart due to issues over personal terms and finances.
As a result, Nwabali found himself without a club for months, affecting his position as Nigeria's first-choice goalkeeper. Now, with his return to Chippa United, Nwabali seeks to re-establish himself in the Premier Soccer League, where he had become a key player since joining from Katsina United in 2022. For Chippa United, his presence is a welcome boost as they prepare for the new season, while for Nwabali, it provides the chance for regular football to regain his status as the Super Eagles' leading goalkeeper before upcoming international fixtures.
