Thomas Tuchel reflects on Jude Bellingham's comments

Thomas Tuchel stated he can lead England to World Cup glory, despite his 'mediocre' playing career, emphasizing that "You don't have to be a horse to be a good jockey." The Three Lions were set to face Argentina in a semi-final match on July 15, 2026, in Atlanta, following Jude Bellingham's reaction to Tuchel's remarks after England's 2-1 victory over Norway.
Tuchel had criticized the team's technical performance in Miami but acknowledged their mentality in securing the win. In response to Tuchel's criticism, Bellingham, who scored both goals in the match, noted, "Maybe that means he doesn't know what it's like to play in those kind of conditions against Erling Haaland, (Martin) Odegaard, (Antonio) Nusa and (Alexander) Sorloth." He had earlier dismissed the manager's remarks during an on-field interview, responding with "whatever."
Tuchel expressed no problem with Bellingham’s comments, suggesting that the player was presented only with the "negative" aspect of his evaluation. On Sunday, he addressed his squad in Kansas City to clarify his criticisms. After Bellingham's remarks were perceived as an allusion to Tuchel's lesser playing career, the manager admitted, "I had a mediocre career, at best. But I don't think that you have to play (to be a manager). A funny quote, you don't have to be a horse to be a good jockey!"
Yet, Tuchel asserted he and Bellingham share similar competitive attitudes. He noted, "I think our comments come from the same place from being competitive and having the edge when competition is on. He was just confronted with the negative side. I called him a world-class player. I said he had world-class actions again to decide the match. I said the mentality is outstanding of this team."
Tuchel recognized that Bellingham might feel defensive after delivering an exceptional performance, saying, "I would also maybe bite back when I come from 120 minutes, scored two goals, gave literally everything that is in my body. It's just a very normal reaction for a player of his mindset."
He conveyed to the entire team after the match, reiterating that his intent was to motivate them moving forward. Tuchel elaborated again to clarify his message on the following Monday evening, focusing attention on the upcoming semi-final against Argentina.
Argentina, like England, had struggled in the knockout rounds, needing extra-time against Cape Verde and Switzerland, and a last-minute winner against Egypt. Tuchel acknowledged the emotional weight that the match held for Argentina due to historical tensions, stating, "They are fuelled by history, it means a lot to them. So this is what we expect and what we are up against."
As the team prepared for the clash with Lionel Messi and Argentina, Tuchel remarked on the challenging nature of the opposing players, emphasizing their tenacity especially in tight situations.
