Tuchel's Unique Preparation for World Cup Semi-Final Against Argentina

Thomas Tuchel said history would not fuel his side when they took on Argentina in the World Cup semi-final on July 15, 2026. Instead, ice cream and a bike ride would power his coaching efforts. The Three Lions’ opponents had repeatedly referenced the Falklands War of 1982 in their celebratory songs during the tournament, alongside mentions of Diego Maradona, whose controversial Hand of God goal knocked England out of the quarter-final in 1986.
A relaxed-looking Tuchel faced the media in Atlanta ahead of what promised to be a momentous clash. He was asked if his team would draw motivation from the shared history of the two nations. "It’s a big rivalry, two big football nations. We expect an intense match, an emotional match, a lot of momentum swings, but we don’t use it as fuel," he stated.
Instead, Tuchel indicated that he would be attempting to downplay the historical backdrop. "The players of both countries are very aware of what it means to them. You can’t say it’s just another football match. As a coach, we focus on what we can influence. We don’t speak about the historic events. The tension is big enough. We try the opposite and influence the players in how we want them to behave. It does not help if we engage emotionally."
Tuchel believes that the prize on offer—a final date with Spain in New York on July 18, 2026—would be enough to motivate his side. "We know why we are here, what we want. We were never shy of saying it or dreaming it. We arrive very hungry. We want the next win. We don’t dip into historical events or make it bigger than it is. We are hungry and ready to go."
He also warned that while England had yet to click in the tournament, the semi-final might be the occasion for them to shine: "We haven’t peaked yet, but a match like this will bring the best out of my players."
In discussing his personal methods for recharging between matches, Tuchel explained, "Sometimes you need a big parking lot, a bike and an ice cream and you feel like a 15-year-old (again). You reconnect to the beauty of that feeling we all have inside of us."
As England prepared for the match, they anticipated the challenge of stopping Lionel Messi, whom they would be encountering for the first time.
