Australian High Commission Cheers Team Nigeria's Success at Glasgow 2026

The Australian High Commission in Nigeria congratulated Team Nigeria for emerging as Africa's highest-ranked nation at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, where the country finished seventh on the final medals table. In a message shared via their official Facebook page, the High Commission commended Team Australia for topping the medals table for a third consecutive Commonwealth Games. "Congratulations to Team Australia on topping the medal table at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games for a third consecutive Games," the High Commission stated. It added: "We also celebrate Team Nigeria, Africa's top-performing nation, on an outstanding seventh-place finish."

Nigeria concluded the Games with a total of 10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze medals, finishing seventh overall and ahead of every other African nation. Australia dominated the event with 70 gold, 45 silver, and 56 bronze medals, accumulating a total of 171 medals, while England and Canada finished in second and third places, respectively.

The campaign for Nigeria was marked by several historic performances. Notably, Samuel Ogazi became the first Nigerian man to win the Commonwealth Games 400 meters title. Ezekiel Nathaniel made history as Nigeria's first Commonwealth champion in the men’s 400m hurdles. Additionally, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi earned distinction by being the first Nigerian to win the men’s shot put title at the Games.

The athletics team contributed the largest share of Nigeria’s medals, with Ruth Usoro winning silver in the women’s long jump, Udodi Onwuzurike claiming silver in the men’s 200m, and Ella Onojuvwevwo finally ending Nigeria’s 32-year wait for a women’s 400m medal with a bronze finish. Nigeria also secured medals in weightlifting, para sports, and judo, marking one of its most successful Commonwealth Games outings in recent years.

The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games featured athletes from 74 nations and territories, competing across 10 sports for a total of 1,168 medals in 215 medal events.
