Lyon retains place as Renshaw appointed opener for second Test

Matt Renshaw returned to the Australian Test squad as Nathan Lyon survived the selection call before the second Test against Bangladesh, set to begin on Saturday in Mackay. Renshaw, who previously opened with Travis Head in the first Test, replaced Jake Weatherald, who was dropped after scoring 23 and 0 in Darwin.
Renshaw's inclusion was confirmed by Australia's captain, Pat Cummins, during a press conference that outlined the plans for the match. Cummins stated that despite considering an all-pace attack, they decided to retain a frontline spinner after assessing the pitch conditions. He mentioned wanting to allow the pitch an additional day to settle before making a final decision on the team's composition.
The curators expected the surface at Great Barrier Reef Arena to favor pace bowlers initially, with conditions that might assist spinners later in the game. Cummins said, "If you think there's a good chance that first or second innings you’re going to take ten with mainly the quicks relatively quickly, that’s a lot of the decision."
Although Lyon took 1 for 102 in the first innings against Bangladesh, he has been a consistent presence in Australian home Test matches, not missing one since 2012. His recent selections were evaluated heavily based on pitch conditions, especially considering previous performances in similar matchups in October 2024. The final decision to include him came after brief discussions, indicating a need for a balanced bowling attack that could adapt throughout the game.
With Weatherald's drop, Cummins referred to the challenge it poses: "Obviously a really tough one for Wethers. I really like the way he goes about it, and he was awesome around the group."
This decision marks a critical moment for Australia as they strive to level the ongoing Test series against Bangladesh.
