Mabasa Reflects on Departure from Orlando Pirates

Tshegofatso Mabasa opened up about his exit from Orlando Pirates, expressing pride in his time with the club while noting the challenges he faced due to limited game time last season. The 29-year-old parted ways with the Buccaneers in June 2026, as his contract was not renewed. During his seven-year tenure, Mabasa made 141 appearances and scored 50 goals for the team.
Mabasa struggled for playing time in his final season, a year that culminated with the Pirates winning a treble, including the Betway Premiership title. He spent the second half of the season on loan at Stellenbosch. In an interview with Cheeseboy Mokoena on SoccerBeat, Mabasa shared insights about the months prior to the loan agreement and the lack of communication regarding his playing status.
“It was a very confusing and difficult situation for me around that time, very challenging mentally as well,” Mabasa remarked. “I had to keep myself ready because any day I could be given the opportunity to go and play. Nothing was really communicated to me in terms of what the next step was.”
Mabasa emphasized his commitment to helping the team win games during that period. He felt a lack of clarity from the club management about his future and options, which contributed to his frustrations. “At the end of the day, all we want to do as footballers is to play on the pitch,” he said.
He revealed how his non-involvement peaked from November to December and that despite his inquiries, no one could provide answers. After reflecting on his situation, he accepted a loan offer from Stellenbosch. “It’s not like I'm playing or I'm given the opportunity,” he noted. “At my age and in my current form, I need to be playing.”
Mabasa mentioned his successful performances in training, scoring about 15 goals during friendly matches. He concluded by affirming his determination to stay positive and continue pushing himself toward a return to competitive football.
