Borthwick on Janse van Rensburg Selection

Steve Borthwick explained that he understands the criticism surrounding his decision to select South Africa-born center Benhard Janse van Rensburg for England's squad. He stated that his role is to build the best possible England team with eligible players, regardless of their backgrounds. Janse van Rensburg, who previously played for South Africa's under-20s, participated in a three-day England training camp in anticipation of fulfilling the five-year residency requirement for eligibility to debut this July.

Critics, including former England scrum-half Danny Care, questioned the choice of picking the 29-year-old Janse van Rensburg over Bath players Ollie Lawrence and Max Ojomoh, who have advanced through England's pathway system. England's policy permits selection of players from domestic clubs, which allowed Janse van Rensburg from Bristol to be available to Borthwick, while notable players from the last Rugby World Cup, such as Jack Willis and Kyle Sinckler, are currently unavailable.

Borthwick acknowledged the discussions about his selection decision, affirming that Janse van Rensburg is committed to playing rugby in England and is eligible. He remarked, "My role is to help develop the best England team we possibly can, with all the players that are eligible to play for England."

Since arriving at London Irish in 2021, Janse van Rensburg has been recognized as one of the most consistent midfielders in the Premiership, noted for his defensive prowess and offensive contributions. Borthwick commended him, "He’s a player I’ve thought very highly of for a long time... He was such a talisman for them."

With consistent positive feedback about Janse van Rensburg's character, Borthwick emphasized the unique strengths he offers, such as his versatility in positions 12 and 13, his carrying ability, distribution skills, and defensive coverage.

Borthwick noted that he recently discussed his decision with Lawrence, acknowledging the presence of other talented players not included in the squad. "There’s tough decisions to make, and those are the decisions you want to make because you’ve got lots of good players," he said.

Janse van Rensburg is not the first player to represent England relying on residency ties. Nathan Hughes, who was born in Fiji, earned 22 caps for England between 2016 and 2019 after his residency period. Other players, like Manu Tuilagi and Semesa Rokoduguni, also qualified on residency grounds.

Furthermore, Borthwick confirmed he is in ongoing discussions with captain Maro Itoje concerning his participation in the team’s summer fixtures. Itoje may be rested as he has surpassed recommended playing time limits. Borthwick stated, "There’s an ongoing conversation with Maro about what the right thing for him to do is over this next period."

Additionally, Bath scrum-half Ben Spencer is also sidelined. Byron McGuigan, former Sale defense coach, will join the summer set-up, focusing on collision skills and working with the back three, following a successful stint with England during the recent tours.
