BMW M3 Touring 24H Makes Appearance at Spa
The BMW M3 Touring 24H, known for its recent strong performance at the Nurburgring 24 Hours where it finished fourth, made a surprise appearance during the driver parade for the Spa 24 Hours event, showcasing a unique roof box. The event occurred in the Belgian Ardennes, where the power estate wagon attracted significant attention from the motorsport community. Fans celebrated the M3 Touring and called for burnouts between the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps and the city center.
Though it first seemed like a marketing gimmick, BMW clarified that the roof box represented a serious technical initiative. The company explained that it used the event to merge BMW's accessories with motorsport technology to demonstrate the roof box's performance capabilities. Currently, this latest generation of BMW roof boxes is in the final stages of development and testing. BMW noted, "A test with the BMW M3 Touring 24H was more than obvious." The roof box was specially designed to enhance aerodynamic efficiency while minimizing noise.
Alongside this, the massive rear wing of the Touring car complemented the aerodynamically optimized roof structure effectively. This roof box also fulfilled a practical role; it allowed the team to transport various giveaways for the fans in Spa during the event. The vehicle further impressed by featuring a passenger seat, meeting promises made during its initial presentations, thereby enhancing its practical usability.
Next Steps
Looking ahead, fans hoping to see the BMW M3 Touring with the roof box again during the race weekend were met with disappointment, as BMW announced that no further appearances were planned. After its successful showcase in the Ardennes, the roof box was dismantled for the remainder of the event. The M3 Touring is set to participate next at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, scheduled from July 23 to 26, where it will compete without the roof box, focusing on achieving top times at the renowned hillclimb.
