LeBron remains tight-lipped about next team

Newsroom

In his first public appearance since announcing his intention to leave the Los Angeles Lakers via free agency, LeBron James did not disclose his next team on Thursday during a live taping of his podcast at Fanatics Fest, an annual sports lifestyle festival. Despite attempts from guest co-host Tyrese Haliburton and the audience to extract details, James remained coy. Haliburton asked, "Is there a decision that still has to be made?" to which James responded, "We literally talked about this in the back, Rese," indicating that revealing his next team was off the table.

"It's going to be pretty fun" he said regarding whichever team he signs with, but he did not specify any choices. Earlier in the day, during the CNBC and Boardroom Game Plan Summit, James suggested his decision was drawing nearer, stating, "I won't hold you guys up too much longer."

James has been pursued by various teams since his agent, Rich Paul, informed the Lakers over two weeks ago about his departure intentions. Among those interested are the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, and Golden State Warriors, according to sources.

Haliburton, who had previously assisted the Indiana Pacers to the 2025 NBA Finals before suffering a right Achilles injury, mentioned his efforts to recruit James to Indiana. "I texted Bron maybe a month ago, before he even made his decision to leave L.A., and I said, 'Hey, if you want to come to Indiana, we can make something crack.'" He humorously recalled James’ response featuring laughing and crying emojis, concluding his pursuit thereafter.

James embraced his popular status at Fanatics Fest, referencing social media commentary about his career. He acknowledged a recent remark suggesting his impact on the game was fading, using it as motivation. He engaged playfully with fans calling out team names for him to join, noting teams like the Warriors and the Yankees.

Additionally, he spoke candidly with an 11-year-old fan named Eli, commenting on how significant free agency was and how it affects his family as he contemplates his fourth free agency experience. He reflected on his family dynamics, mentioning his children as pressing factors in his decision-making process, particularly his almost 12-year-old daughter, Zhuri.

James revealed a candid moment with Zhuri prior to his free agency announcement, sharing that he informed her about his departure from the Lakers and the possibility of not being home often. Despite the uncertainty regarding his future, he thanked his former team, recognizing his impactful eight years with the Lakers and appreciating the franchise's legacy.
