Marcus Freeman expresses commitment to Notre Dame amid NFL interest

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman stated he doesn’t envision himself ‘coaching anywhere else’ amidst interest from the NFL. Freeman, who has led Notre Dame to three straight double-digit-win seasons, made headlines after declining NFL opportunities last winter in a social media post declaring, "2026…run it back" and adding "Go Irish."

On July 21, 2026, during a press meeting, Freeman appeared determined to continue at Notre Dame for the foreseeable future. “I’m all-in. I’ve been all-in,” Freeman remarked. “I don’t see myself being the head coach or coaching anywhere else.” He earlier hinted at the prospect of spending the remainder of his career with Notre Dame on the “Not Just Football” show, hosted by former NFL defensive end Cam Heyward.

Freeman acknowledged that while he considered NFL roles — particularly with teams like the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers — his heart lies with the Fighting Irish. "There were times when I wanted to listen to some other people and I did," said Freeman. “It confirmed that this is the place I want to be.”

At 40 years old, Freeman boasts appeal to players, fans, and management alike. His coaching style has been showcased through a season-long documentary on Peacock, "Here Come The Irish.” Interestingly, his motivating speech after Notre Dame’s challenging 0-2 start drew more attention from NFL circles than the team's early performance.

To support Freeman and solidify his loyalty, Notre Dame has reevaluated his contract in the past two offseasons, positioning him as one of the highest-paid coaches without a national title, estimated at nearly $12 million annually. Athletic director Pete Bevacqua emphasized the commitment to Freeman, asserting, "He will be where he deserves to be...at the top tier of college football coaches."

Freeman remarked on his dedication to Notre Dame: "I plan on being here as long as I can. If I do a good enough job...I want to stay the head coach here."
