Lando Norris expressed mixed feelings about the current Formula 1 season as he prepares for the British Grand Prix. He labeled the start to his and McLaren's title defense as "dreadful" in terms of reliability, although he noted that the pace "has not been terrible." Reflecting on the challenges faced this year, Norris commented, "I'm happy I have the pain of this year for the glory of last," acknowledging that their struggles derive from their previous successes.
Norris highlighted that McLaren did not anticipate entering 2026 without replicating the success from 2024 and 2025. The team recognized that the intense effort exerted to secure their title double last season has had repercussions. "We still put a lot of effort into making sure we were ready for this year. And we're not as ready and as strong as we would have liked to have been," he said. He added, "A good amount of trying to win the championship last year required a continued dedication on the car of last season... It's just the price you pay in a very competitive world against extremely good teams and clever people."
As the season progresses, McLaren has found itself behind rival teams, fluctuating between being the second and fourth fastest, with Norris recalling a missed opportunity for victory in Miami due to a strategic error. Currently, he ranks fifth in the championship, trailing leader Kimi Antonelli by 92 points. Spoiling for improvement, Norris remarked, "Expectations were high from my side. It's just been more difficult than we would have wanted." He acknowledged their struggles stem primarily from issues with reliability.
Despite these challenges, Norris finds strength in his achievement of winning the drivers' championship last year, providing him with the resilience to cope with the current difficulties. "I'm still able to smile more even during tough times because of last season," he shared. He reiterated his desire to return to winning, labeling consistent finishes outside the top ranks as unsatisfactory.
Norris's loyalty to McLaren remains unwavering, stating that he would choose to remain with the team even if it meant a different level of competitiveness. "I would rather stay here and enjoy my years at McLaren than maybe choose to go somewhere else where I could have a better chance," he emphasized.
While he understands the current rumors in F1 regarding team changes, Norris confirmed he is under contract with McLaren until the end of next year, as is his teammate Oscar Piastri. Speculation has also linked Max Verstappen with McLaren, but Norris expressed that he welcomes competition and would have no qualms about racing alongside Verstappen, highlighting his openness to prove himself against top drivers.
