Carrick focuses on lessons after Hull defeat

Michael Carrick, the English head coach of Manchester United, acknowledged that his team had "a lot to learn" after a surprising 2-0 defeat at the hands of Hull City in their opening match of the Premier League season on August 22, 2026. Carrick's squad was overwhelmed by Hull, with the Tigers scoring two first-half goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy, marking a shocking return for the promoted team to the Premier League after a nine-year absence.

Carrick noted that United struggled both offensively and defensively, which proved detrimental against a newly promoted side. "We have a bit to improve on; it was never going to be perfect. Going behind makes it more difficult, against a promoted team at home," he stated. He recognized the team's shortcomings, especially in set-piece defense, where they were punished twice.

Despite the disappointment, Carrick asserted that the result would not deter the team's efforts moving forward. "We can’t give them much, and they had opportunities. We’re disappointed but it won’t knock us," he remarked. Carrick had preemptively warned his players about underestimating Hull and their next opponents, Ipswich, another promoted side they would be facing shortly.

He emphasized the need for improvement throughout the week as they aimed to grow stronger together as a team, stating, "We have a lot to learn from it. Two goals are frustrating anyway. They decide the game today, and there are things to improve on."

The match highlighted the urgency for Manchester United to bolster their squad after a relatively quiet transfer window. Debutants Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos performed poorly in midfield, leading to their substitution in the second half. United is set to sign Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, yet Carrick indicated that more reinforcements would be necessary following this lackluster display.

"One game doesn’t change the direction of everything. It doesn’t change the direction of the football club," Carrick said. He also refrained from discussing Baleba's impending transfer, stating he had focused solely on the match at hand.

Bruno Fernandes, United's captain and last season's Premier League single-season assist record holder, struggled to make an impact during the match, a sentiment echoed by the frustrated fans in attendance. "We understand the frustration; every season at the start, we want to compete and win every game, but we need the fans on our side and to believe in ourselves," Fernandes said. He acknowledged the challenges posed by playing away at such grounds, reiterating that the two set pieces ultimately cost them the match.
