Broos Questions Zwane's Suspension Over Messi Incident

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos expressed his frustration regarding the three-match suspension given to Themba Zwane, which he deemed too severe, particularly in light of recent events involving Lionel Messi. Zwane, aged 36, received a straight red card during a match described as violent conduct after he appeared to strike a Mexican opponent in the face following a challenge. The incident was reviewed by Video Assistant Referee (VAR), which led to FIFA imposing a three-match suspension. Broos confirmed that they would appeal the suspension in a pre-match press conference.
Broos articulated his concerns over the severity of Zwane's punishment, stating, "I’m a little bit frustrated that Themba [Zwane] got a three-match suspension. We will appeal it; our situation is clear: if we don’t win tomorrow, we play the last game against South Korea for nothing and that’s something we have to avoid."
He elaborated on his viewpoint, contrasting Zwane’s situation with that of Messi, who recently faced a similar scenario. "First of all, I think the red card is too severe. I saw the situation; I don’t think it was a red card. When I see what happened with Messi yesterday, I certainly don’t agree. There was not even a VAR with Messi. With us, there was, and the Mexican player blocked my player."
According to Broos, Zwane simply attempted to navigate past an opponent and did not commit a foul deserving of a red card. "Themba tried to go past him and put his arm over his shoulder; he didn’t do anything. A red card and a three-match suspension, I’m sorry, it’s too severe. I don’t want Messi to be red-carded; he needs to be on the pitch, and we saw what a wonderful player he is. But yes, I’m a little frustrated because Themba got a three-match suspension."
South Africa's national team is set to face Czekhia tomorrow in their second Group A clash, a match critical for their hopes of advancing to the knockout stage.
