Bulls to play Leinster in Vodacom URC Grand Final
Newsroom
The Vodacom Bulls faced Leinster in the Vodacom United Rugby Championship Grand Final on June 19, 2023, at Croke Park in Dublin. This match represented a rematch of last year’s final, with both teams having previously secured their places by winning their respective semi-finals.
In the semi-finals, the Vodacom Bulls achieved a thrilling victory over the Glasgow Warriors with a score of 22-21. This win came after a challenging match, where the Bulls had to overcome two yellow cards. Despite being down 21-3 at one point, they completed an impressive comeback with significant contributions from players like Johan Grobbelaar, Embrose Papier, and Francois Klopper, who each scored tries. Handre Pollard also added conversions and a penalty goal, sealing the win despite three missed penalty attempts in the closing stages.
Leinster, on the other hand, defeated the DHL Stormers 20-11 in their semi-final match at the Aviva Stadium. The Stormers struggled with discipline, receiving multiple cards that weakened their efforts. Rieko Ioane scored the first try for Leinster, and Sam Prendergast added two penalty goals, increasing their lead to 13-0. Although the Stormers managed to score through Adre Smith and keep the match competitive, further disciplinary issues cost them dearly as they finished the game with only 13 players.
Now, the stage is set for an exciting final between the Bulls, looking to capture the championship title for the first time at this level, and Leinster, who aim to defend their title at home. The match is expected to attract significant attention and will be broadcast live on SuperSport in South Africa.
