Cat Ferguson's race ended abruptly during the Giro d'Italia Women, as the 20-year-old British cyclist crashed on stage 1, forcing her to withdraw. Ferguson, riding for Movistar, expressed her disappointment, stating, "I’m absolutely gutted to have had to leave the race like this before it even really started."
Prior to the accident, Ferguson had been in excellent form, having secured a victory at the Navarra Women’s Elite Classic earlier in the season along with a podium finish at The Traka 100, marking her successful gravel debut. Following the crash, her team provided updates on her condition, confirming that medical evaluations ruled out significant injuries such as a brain injury or cranio-cervical bone injuries.
On June 1, 2026, Movistar indicated that Ferguson was making good progress in her recovery from a head injury. In a subsequent social media update, the team reported that she was exhibiting few symptoms and would return home to continue her rehabilitation. "She’ll surely be back in action soon. Stay strong, Cat!" the team encouraged.
In her own online statement, Ferguson thanked the team medical staff, race organizers, and hospital staff for their care. She acknowledged the support she received following the crash, saying, "I’m going to be fine with time, but I’m absolutely gutted to have had to leave the race like this before it even really started." While referring to the recovery process, she noted the implementation of concussion protocols and anticipated a healing period for her wrist as well.
Ferguson concluded her message by wishing good luck to her teammates for the upcoming stages of the Giro d'Italia Women.
