Tandy's Wales prepares for a challenging summer of travel

Steve Tandy's Wales rugby team faced a busy schedule as they prepared for a challenging summer of travel. Following the conclusion of the domestic rugby season at the end of May, Tandy's squad was set to play four matches on consecutive weekends, extending the rugby calendar until mid-July.
The summer fixtures commenced with an uncapped men's and women's double-header against the Barbarians on 27 June at the Allianz Stadium, followed by three matches in the newly formed Nations Championship against Fiji, Argentina, and South Africa in July. Despite finishing last in the Six Nations for the third consecutive year after a home victory against Italy, Tandy was now focused on the upcoming challenges.
Both the matches against the Barbarians and Fiji would not take place at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff. While the venue was unavailable due to major concerts, including Metallica on 28 June, Tandy's squad was also the 'away' side for these fixtures according to the Welsh Rugby Union.
The Nations Championship was a new competition bringing together Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere teams during non-World Cup years, transforming summer and autumn test matches into a structured league format. Starting with a game in Cardiff, Wales would then travel over 7,000 miles to face Argentina in San Juan, followed by another long journey to Durban to play South Africa. Tandy recognized the logistical challenges of the summer's travel, especially as the team would accumulate more than 12,000 miles within weeks, and he urged his squad to embrace these difficulties without making excuses.
Tandy initially named a 48-player squad, which included six uncapped players, among them Kane James and Bryn Bradley. Additional selections featured recalls for players like Dillon Lewis and Tommy Reffell. However, the squad was later reduced due to injuries, with Louie Hennessey and Keiron Assiratti unable to participate. The inclusion of players such as Jac Morgan and Dewi Lake, who missed the Six Nations, provided a boost.
The Barbarians, fielding star players including George North, recently suffered a heavy defeat to South Africa. After the encounter with the Barbarians, the squad was expected to be trimmed further ahead of the prestigious Nations Championship.
Upcoming Matches:
- Saturday, 27 June: Barbarians v Wales, Allianz Stadium, Twickenham (14:00 BST)
- Saturday, 4 July: Fiji v Wales, Cardiff City Stadium (14:10 BST)
- Saturday, 11 July: Argentina v Wales, Estadio San Juan del Bicentenario, San Juan (20:10 BST)
- Saturday, 18 July: South Africa v Wales, Hollywoodbets Kings Park, Durban (16:40 BST)
Tandy and his players looked forward to navigating a demanding travel schedule as they prepared to take their talents on the road.
