In the latest T20 Blast round-up, Lancashire, Essex, and Northamptonshire secured victories in their respective matches. David Willey celebrated his 50th game as the Northamptonshire Steelbacks T20 captain by leading them to a sixth consecutive Vitality Blast win over Worcestershire Rapids at Wantage Road. Willey achieved figures of 2-28 with the ball and top-scored with 47 runs off 33 balls. He formed a significant partnership of 69 runs with Justin Broad, which contributed to Willey surpassing 5,000 career runs in T20 cricket.
In another match, Lancashire managed to snap a three-game losing streak, with Liam Livingstone's outstanding performance helping them chase down a target of 129 in a rain-reduced, 10-over game against Durham at Banks Homes Riverside. Livingstone made an impressive 85 not out off 31 balls, hitting eight sixes and thus boosting Lancashire’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals. Conversely, this match marked Durham's fourth defeat within six games.
On the other hand, Essex garnered their fourth consecutive win with a narrow three-run victory over Kent in Chelmsford. Charlie Allison was in excellent form, scoring a personal best of 74 runs, while Jordan Cox contributed 40 runs in his first appearance for Essex this summer after his IPL stint and involvement with the England Lions. The Eagles faced a spirited comeback from Kent, who managed to challenge after Sam Billings scored a notable 62 runs. However, Kent ended their innings at 184-9, leaving Essex comfortably positioned in the second spot in the South Group.
In the game against Worcestershire, a second-wicket partnership of 62 runs from 48 balls between Gareth Roderick and Brett D'Oliveira set a challenging total of 154-5 from 18 overs. Despite a shaky start for the Steelbacks chasing this total, Chris Lynn provided momentum with a quick 37 runs off just 18 balls. After Willey and Broad contributed significantly, Northamptonshire achieved a six-wicket victory via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method, placing them at the top of the Central and West Group.
As for Lancashire, they struggled early in their innings but ultimately chased down 130 runs for victory with five balls to spare, thanks to Livingstone’s explosive hitting. His innings not only helped Lancashire secure their second victory of the season but also set a new record for the most sixes hit by a Lancashire player in T20 history.
With the tournament now on a two-and-a-half-week hiatus, the teams will aim to regroup and strategize for the upcoming matches.
