NBA Considers Nashville Games for Grizzlies

In a recent appearance on Barstool’s podcast "Pardon My Take," NBA Commissioner Adam Silver discussed the potential for the Memphis Grizzlies to play a few games each year in Nashville. While he acknowledged the Grizzlies' strong ties to Memphis, Silver expressed enthusiasm for the idea of expanding the team's presence in Tennessee's capital, citing Nashville's growth and vibrant sports culture.

Silver's comments come in response to LeBron James' recent remarks about Memphis, where he suggested that the Grizzlies should consider relocating to Nashville due to its more established sports scene. James, who has been vocal about his dislike for playing in Memphis, pointed out that Nashville is home to several professional teams, including the NHL's Predators and the NFL's Titans. "Staying at the f—ing Hyatt at 41 years old, you think I want to do that s—?" James said, highlighting the challenges of playing in Memphis.

Despite James' comments, Silver defended Memphis as a viable NBA market. He stated, "Players I talk to all the time like playing in Memphis. I’ve never heard that issue of players not wanting to be in Memphis." He emphasized the city's rich basketball history and culture, which have made it a significant market for the league.

The idea of the Grizzlies playing in Nashville is not without precedent. Other teams, such as the San Antonio Spurs, have successfully engaged in regional activation by playing games in nearby cities. For instance, the Spurs played two regular-season games in Austin, Texas, as part of their I-35 Series. However, the geographical distance between Memphis and Nashville—213 miles—poses a different challenge compared to the Spurs' arrangement.

Silver remains optimistic about the Grizzlies' future in Memphis, stating, "From my standpoint, there’s no reason why the Memphis Grizzlies can’t be successful." The team's lease at FedExForum, which opened in 2004, runs until the end of the 2028-29 season, providing a stable foundation for the franchise in Memphis. As discussions about expanding the Grizzlies' footprint continue, it remains to be seen how the team will balance its commitments to both Memphis and the potential allure of Nashville.
