Gabriel Langton suffers fall at Commonwealth Games final

At the Commonwealth Games 2026, England gymnast Gabriel Langton suffered a serious fall during the final event. The teenager fell head-first during his high bar routine, leading to a pause in the competition as medical personnel rushed to his aid. Langton received treatment on site as the arena fell silent, with other gymnasts visibly concerned.

The 19-year-old remained motionless for a moment before responding to medical staff by moving his legs and later his hands. A dozen medical professionals stabilized him before he was taken off the mat on a stretcher approximately 11 minutes after the fall. He received applause from the crowd as he was transported from the competition floor.

The incident occurred while England was competing for their fourth consecutive Commonwealth Games men's artistic gymnastics team title against Canada, who led the standings at that moment. Australia was in third, while Scotland and Cyprus were also in contention.

After Langton's fall, teammate Luke Whitehouse took to the high bar under difficult circumstances. Despite maintaining composure, he lost his balance on the dismount and landed on the mat, visibly disappointed. "When something like that happens, you’ve just got to forget about it and reset," Whitehouse commented about having to perform after Langton's accident.

England finished the event with a score of 238.250, requiring Canada to earn 36.450 points in their final three routines to secure gold. The Canadians successfully held their nerve; veteran René Cournoyer opened with a score of 13.500, followed by Félix Dolci, who impressed with a score of 13.700. Canada finished with a total of 241.400, claiming their first Commonwealth men’s team gold since 2006. England took the silver medal, while Australia secured the bronze with 235.650 points.

Throughout the competition, England fought their way back into contention despite difficult moments, including Whitehouse's minor mishap. Gymnasts like Alexander Yolshin-Cash contributed significantly to their score, achieving the best parallel bars score of the night at 14.100. Scotland nearly challenged Australia for the bronze but ultimately fell short despite strong performances from Cameron Lynn and others.

The day was a reminder of the dangers in gymnastics, with Whitehouse noting, "It’s one of those things you have to put out of your mind. From what we’ve heard, [Langton] is doing OK."
