Rahm Overcomes Tough Day and Will Compete for the British Open
Newsroom

Jon Rahm salvaged a complicated day at the British Open, finishing the third round with a score of 70, which began with a double bogey. He will head into the final round on Sunday, six strokes behind the leader, Sam Burns.
Rahm’s round followed a turbulent second round, which ended with the controversy surrounding Bryson DeChambeau's penalty. The tournament entered a decisive third day ahead of the final on Sunday. During this so-called "moving day," the most notable performance came from New Zealand’s Ryan Fox, who matched the record for the lowest round in the history of the Majors. He joined Lucas Herbert and Burns by achieving this feat.
At the top of the leaderboard, Burns leads with a score of 200. The friend of Scottie Scheffler has been in great form after a shaky first day and recently finished second at the US Open. Another notable player in the afternoon session was Si Woo Kim, who scored 202. Despite a tough day for Rahm, who finished at par, he remains in contention with a total score of 206.
Currently, there are 19 players within six strokes on the leaderboard, with several players gaining position. Herbert fell slightly to a score of 203, while DeChambeau scored 204 and remains one of the top LIV Golf players, vying for his third Major title following Brooks Koepka and DeChambeau’s previous wins. Other competitors in strong positions include Ludvig Åberg at 204 and Tommy Fleetwood at 205, with Scottie Scheffler also at 206.
The tournament is still wide open, with other top players like Xander Schauffele, Shane Lowry, and Hideki Matsuyama all at 206. Josele Ballester is also well-positioned at 207, while Rory McIlroy has fallen behind at 208 after starting strong but finishing with a score of 69. Cameron Young, who placed second at St. Andrews in 2022, had a solid start but faltered during the second nine holes.
All eyes were on DeChambeau, who spent time on the practice range the night before, reflecting on his controversial penalty. He managed a solid round of 69; however, he lacked the magic from earlier in the tournament and failed to find the hole consistently.
Rahm's day started poorly, with a double bogey on the first tee shot going out of bounds. He made another errant tee shot on his second hole but bounced back, scoring a birdie next. After another birdie on the fifth hole and a bogey on the eighth, he went into the back nine at one over. He continued to fight, eventually sinking a long putt on the 14th par five, bringing him to four under for the tournament. With a remarkable shot from his knees on the 18th, Rahm nearly secured another birdie, showcasing his determination as he prepares for the final round.
