Newsroom
The Nigeria Football Federation reported that the national football team, known as the Super Eagles, managed to secure a 2-2 draw against Poland in an international friendly held in Warsaw on June 3, 2026. The draw marked an extension of Nigeria's unbeaten streak to 12 matches.
Poland, keen to make a statement after their previous match loss to Ukraine, started the game aggressively. Just 4 minutes into the match, Jakub Kaminski had a close-range header attempt that went wide of the goal, which was guarded by goalkeeper Maduka Okoye. The Polish side, supported by over 54,000 fans at the Stadion PGE Narodowy, displayed determination with players like Robert Lewandowski, Karol Swiderski, Piotr Zielinski, and Kacper Potulski all contributing to the early pressure in search of the first goal.
However, the first goal of the match was scored by Nigeria. In the 23rd minute, Moses Simon assisted Terem Moffi, who scored following a brilliant pass from captain Wilfred Ndidi. After initially being ruled offside, the decision was overturned by VAR, confirming the goal. Okoye showcased his skills by saving a shot from Swiderski in the 28th minute. Towards the end of the first half, Nigeria almost doubled their lead, but Tochukwu Nnadi's attempt was thwarted by Polish goalkeeper Kamil Grabara. In the added time of the first half, Poland managed to equalize through Potulski, who capitalized on a goalmouth scramble.
As the second half commenced, Nigeria looked to regain their lead but missed a chance when Raphael Onyedika overhit his shot in the 56th minute. Abdullah Bewene, making his debut, played a significant role in Nigeria's attacks, including a notable play in the 73rd minute when Zaidu Sanusi's shot was saved by Grabara.
Three minutes later, Nigeria gained a penalty, successfully converted by Paul Onuachu from six yards, putting Nigeria ahead again. As the match approached its conclusion, Poland seemed to have leveled the score once again but Okoye stopped the free-kick effort with minutes left. Yet, Przemyslaw Wiśniewski equalized with a powerful strike from distance, securing a draw at 2-2.
Next, the Super Eagles will face Portugal in another friendly match in Leiria on June 10, 2026, which will serve as Portugal’s final preparation before the FIFA World Cup finals.
