England manager Thomas Tuchel defended midfielder Jude Bellingham after he was involved in a heated exchange with Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz during halftime of Tuesday's goalless draw. Bellingham was pulled away by teammate Morgan Rogers as he engaged with Queiroz and his staff shortly after a foul in which he shoved Jerome Opoku. The incident escalated following the referee's whistle for halftime, continuing as players and coaches walked off the field at Boston Stadium.
"It was an exchange of emotions, and Jude stood up for himself and his team," Tuchel remarked. He further stated, "Emotions are a part of the game but we don't want to get distracted with stuff that could distract us." No cards were issued in the aftermath of the incident, and by the time the second half resumed, tensions appeared to have settled.
Queiroz later commented, "He had a bad reaction with some bad names and that’s why the story started." The draw kept England at the top of Group L, ensuring they will qualify for the last 32 if they avoid defeat against Panama on Saturday.
Bellingham, 22, made history by becoming the youngest England player to reach 50 caps during the match, although he was unable to help the Three Lions capitalize on their earlier 4-2 victory over Croatia. Ghana maintained a defensive stance for much of the game and effectively contained Tuchel's squad.
Previously, Bellingham was sent off in February for using foul and abusive language while playing for Real Madrid, but he sought to downplay the recent incident, saying, "It was just when I made a silly tackle, to be honest. I was trying to win the ball, and I followed through a little bit and caught the lad. I spoke to him after, and then their bench jumped up trying to get me a yellow card.
"I think their manager [Queiroz] I just recognized him. He’s obviously the one who used to be at Manchester United, so great respect, and nothing but a competitive edge for both of us," Bellingham added.
Before the World Cup, Bellingham's spot in England's starting XI was not guaranteed, with Tuchel indicating he needed to fight for his position. Their relationship had been scrutinized, especially after Tuchel labeled Bellingham's conduct during a June match against Senegal as "repulsive," a statement he later retracted after criticism. In November, Tuchel remarked he would review Bellingham’s behavior after a reaction to being substituted during a World Cup qualifier against Albania.
Bellingham scored against Croatia and received the player of the match accolade in the draw with Ghana, but after winning, he expressed humility by stating, "I didn’t deserve it, to be honest. It probably should’ve gone to one of their lads who defended so well. I had a couple of moments but couldn’t get in the game. I’m grateful to whoever voted."
