Switzerland defeats Colombia in penalty shootout to advance

Switzerland defeated Colombia 4-3 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes in a fiercely contested FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match in Vancouver. The Swiss team's patience, defensive discipline, and composure under pressure earned them a deserved place in the quarter-finals.

Both teams displayed tactical discipline, physical resilience, and defensive organisation, refusing to take unnecessary risks with a quarter-final spot at stake. Colombia began brightly, dominating possession and maneuvering the ball quickly through midfield, while attempting to exploit Switzerland with swift counter-attacks. The South Americans pressed aggressively, won second balls, and disrupted Switzerland’s passing rhythm throughout the opening half.

Despite enjoying more possession, Colombia struggled to break through Switzerland’s compact defense. Switzerland found it difficult to settle early, as Colombia’s relentless pressing led to misplaced passes and isolated forwards. However, after the hydration break, the momentum shifted, with Switzerland growing into the contest and controlling possession. The Europeans patiently built attacks from the back and dictated the tempo, forcing Colombia to defend deeper, while Colombia remained dangerous on the counter, finishing the first half strongly under sustained pressure.

Switzerland introduced midfielder Djibril Sow for Ardon Jashari immediately after the restart to strengthen their midfield, adding energy and improving their ability to regain possession and launch attacks. Swiss captain Granit Xhaka received a yellow card in the 51st minute for halting a dangerous Colombian attack, with teammate Denis Zakaria cautioned eight minutes later, followed by Luis Suárez of Colombia in the 61st minute.

Colombia made a double substitution in the 66th minute, bringing on Juan Fernando Quintero for James Rodríguez and Johan Campaz for Jhon Arias. Although these changes injected fresh attacking impetus, Switzerland’s disciplined defense continued to frustrate Colombia. Further depth was added to Switzerland's left flank with Miro Muheim replacing Ricardo Rodríguez in the 71st minute, as Colombia brought on Carlos Hernández and Richard Ríos for Luis Suárez and Jefferson Lerma in the 82nd minute.

Extra time mirrored the match's earlier pattern, with Switzerland holding more possession and Colombia threatening through fast transitions. As fatigue set in, both teams dealt with cramps and Davinson Sánchez received a yellow card in the 95th minute, but neither side could find a breakthrough. The match ultimately went to penalties, after the deadlock remained unbroken.

Juan Fernando Quintero converted Colombia’s opening penalty before Xhaka responded confidently for Switzerland. Colombia's Arsenal player Davinson Sánchez missed the second spot-kick, allowing Zeki Amdouni to give Switzerland the advantage. Johan Campaz scored for Colombia, but Manuel Akanji failed to extend Switzerland’s lead after missing his penalty. Colombia’s Carlos Hernández then missed two penalties, before Cedric Itten calmly converted Switzerland’s fourth.

Luis Díaz kept Colombia’s hopes alive by scoring, but Ruben Vargas converted the decisive penalty to secure Switzerland’s 4-3 penalty shootout victory. Despite Colombia's impressive pressing and counter-attacking play, they paid the price for failing to convert promising opportunities. The match was played at BC Place Stadium in Vancouver, Canada.
