Rassie Erasmus, head coach of the Springboks, has called up 20-year-old Stormers lock Riley Norton to start in the second row against the Barbarians this weekend. Norton, who hails from Stellenbosch, has already established himself as a prominent player, having captained South Africa to victory in the 2025 U20 World Cup.
Erasmus highlighted Norton’s maturity for his age, noting, "I don’t want to single out a player because he’s standing out more than the others, but he’s definitely a guy who’s got maturity about him, coming into the Springbok set-up as a young guy. He’s definitely not at all windgat [a show-off], he’s confident, and there’s an aura around him."
Norton is not just a rugby talent; he also competed in cricket, representing South Africa at the U19 level and playing a total of eight matches for the national team before committing to rugby full-time. Earlier this year, Norton shared insights into his journey in rugby, detailing how he was inspired to take up the sport due to his family's influence. His father, Chris, played for Western Province, and his brother also played, which fostered his passion for the game.
He expressed the camaraderie and joy rugby brings him, stating, "It’s my passion, I love it. There is nothing that fills me with more joy and purpose than playing rugby. It’s a much bigger thing in South Africa than just a game. It’s like a lifestyle, a big part of our culture."
Having played various positions, including lock and flanker, Norton is known for his high work-rate and commitment on the field. His first representative game for South Africa occurred in 2023 against France during the U18 international series, a milestone that he describes as a dream come true.
Growing up, he idolized Pieter-Steph du Toit, appreciating his work ethic and presence on the field. Norton noted that he takes pride in getting through tough play, mentioning the importance of collisions, rucking, and carrying the ball. He is currently focused on enhancing his explosiveness and speed while pursuing a business degree in investment management at Stellenbosch University.
Norton aspires to play for the Springboks and represent his hometown team, the Stormers. The recent call-up signifies his rapid rise in South African rugby, which is widely recognized for its depth of talent.
