In Game 1 of the Women’s College World Series (WCWS) championship series, Texas defeated Texas Tech with a score of 7-3. The Longhorns jumped to an early lead, scoring five runs in the first inning. This victory marked Texas's 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.
Texas and Texas Tech met in the championship series for the second consecutive year, with Texas aiming to defend the national title they secured the previous year.
Game 2 is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on June 4, 2026. If Texas wins, they will clinch the series and repeat as champions. If Texas Tech manages to win, a decisive Game 3 will take place on June 5, 2026.
Following the game, Texas head coach Mike White mentioned that they would deliberate overnight on the pitching decisions for Game 2, considering either Teagan Kavan or Citlaly Gutierrez to start in the circle.
Kavan was a standout in Game 1, pitching the entire game and allowing three hits and three earned runs. She reflected on her performance, stating, "I was able to change speeds enough tonight and live in different areas. It’s huge against the offense that we’re facing."
The Longhorns displayed an offensive balance, with eight players recording hits and six players scoring. Among the notable performances was Katie Stewart, who hit a two-run home run in the first inning, contributing to Texas's offensive explosion.
In contrast, Texas Tech’s head coach Gerry Glasco acknowledged that they lost momentum during the game, particularly after Texas's impressive opening inning. He noted, "Bottom line, they just beat us tonight, and it was their night."
With this victory, Texas is one win away from repeating as national champions in what has become a competitive rivalry between the two Texas schools.
