Arshdeep's Performance Raises Concerns for PBKS

IPL 2026 - PBKS vs RR: Arshdeep Singh's Form Draws Attention

In the latest match in the IPL 2026 season, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) suffered their first defeat against the Rajasthan Royals (RR), prompting discussions about the team's bowling performance. While the batting has been a strong point for PBKS, their inability to adapt when the batsmen faltered became apparent during this contest.

James Hopes, the fast-bowling coach for PBKS, maintained a calm demeanor in response to questions about the team's bowling, suggesting that minor adjustments were necessary. However, fellow teammates Piyush Chawla and Abhinav Mukund highlighted that the match served as a significant wake-up call, specifically pointing to the concerning form of their premier fast bowler, Arshdeep Singh.

This season, Arshdeep has taken only eight wickets across eight matches and has an alarming economy rate of 10.96. Moreover, he leads the league with 19 wides thrown, indicating a lack of precision. In a striking statistic, from the 33 bowlers who have delivered 120 or more balls this season, Arshdeep stands out negatively for the proportion of legal deliveries that turned into wides: 19 out of 180 (10.56%). To put this in perspective, Eshan Malinga, the next highest, has recorded 16 wides out of 162 deliveries (9.88%).

Chawla expressed concern, noting that Arshdeep's capacity to deliver effective yorkers during crucial phases, usually a strength, seems to be fluctuating. Despite acknowledging that some deliveries were intentionally aimed wide, both he and Mukund felt that Arshdeep's game plan seemed off in recent outings.

In a concerning display against RR, Arshdeep allowed 68 runs in four overs, highlighting his struggles—15 runs in one over during the powerplay and 22 in another, only further underscoring his inefficacy with the new ball. While there have been exceptional performances, such as his 3 for 22 against the Mumbai Indians, he has frequently faltered, averaging nearly 11 runs per over.

With the playoffs approaching, the loss to RR serves as a critical reminder of the need for improvement. The discussion among the team reflects a broader concern about their bowling performance, with thoughts on potential playoff scenarios becoming crucial as they navigate through the final stages of the tournament.
