Pitso Shares Reflections on Bafana Bafana's World Cup Exit

Newsroom

Former Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane shared his thoughts on the team's exit from the FIFA World Cup Last 32, which occurred on June 29, 2026. The current squad made history by reaching the knockout stages of the tournament for the first time. Expectations were high before their match against co-hosts Canada, with many supporters looking ahead to possible Last 16 opponents such as the Netherlands or Morocco.

The match appeared headed towards extra time, but in a heartbreaking turn during stoppage time, Canada scored to secure a 1-0 victory, leaving millions of South Africans disheartened.

After the match, Mosimane commended Bafana for their achievement in reaching this phase of the prestigious tournament while noting that the team fell short in their offensive efforts. He remarked, "It’s been a good ride, sweet sour taste. We can be proud that the boys have gone to the knockout stages. But we need more than that; looking at Canada – we didn’t appear capable of winning but likely failed to convince enough in our final third or final pass to suggest we could have easily claimed victory."

Mosimane preferred not to use the term 'disappointing' to describe the team's performance but expressed curiosity about what lies ahead for Bafana Bafana. He is reportedly among the candidates to take over the coaching position if Hugo Broos steps down, as previously indicated prior to the tournament.
