Hetmyer replaces injured Greaves for NZ ODIs

Shimron Hetmyer replaced the injured Justin Greaves in the West Indies squad for the second and third ODIs against New Zealand. Greaves suffered a back injury that prevented him from participating in the first ODI in Providence and has returned to Barbados for rehabilitation, as stated by Cricket West Indies.

Hetmyer, who last played an ODI in June 2025, was recalled to the ODI squad during the West Indies' three-match series against Sri Lanka in June, but did not play in that series. He had initially been excluded from the squad for the first three ODIs against New Zealand to allow him to complete his MLC stint with the Seattle Orcas. However, after the Orcas finished fifth in the league stage and failed to qualify for the knockout stage, Hetmyer became available to join the West Indies squad.

In the MLC this year, Hetmyer scored 164 runs in ten matches, with a strike rate of 136.66. Cricket West Indies confirmed that Greaves would be reassessed before the upcoming final two ODIs against New Zealand and the following two-match Test series against Pakistan. Greaves had an impressive performance in his last Test, scoring 180 runs in a high-scoring draw against Sri Lanka, which contributed to the West Indies winning their first Test series since 2023, earning him the player of the series award.

Cricket West Indies plans to announce the squad for the final two ODIs later this week. The West Indies currently lead the series after defeating New Zealand by seven wickets in the first ODI. The first three ODIs are scheduled to take place in Providence, with the last two matches set for Bridgetown.
