Mbappé Explains Penalty Miss Against Morocco Due to Referee Mix-up

In the 2026 World Cup match against Morocco, Kylian Mbappé missed a penalty and explained that the failure resulted from a mix-up with the referee. Despite being known for his exceptional scoring ability, having tallied 20 goals in 20 matches in the World Cup, the French captain faced an unexpected setback against Yassine Bonou, the Moroccan goalkeeper.

During the match, although he had a chance to potentially enhance his already impressive statistics, Mbappé poorly executed his penalty kick, allowing Bonou to showcase his skills once more. However, Mbappé offered a different perspective on his miss, emphasizing that the lengthy wait and discussions surrounding the penalty contributed to his distraction.

In an interview with RMC Sport, Mbappé recounted the moment, noting, "I didn't take the penalty well. But it was complicated; there was a mix-up with the referee. He told me there was a penalty. I prepared for it, but then he came back to tell me there was no penalty anymore... I got distracted."

The unexpected change in circumstances left him unable to maintain focus, which he recognized as a critical factor in his missed opportunity.

As he reflects on this experience, Mbappé made it clear that he intends to better prepare himself for similar situations in the future.
