MLB Trade Rumors: Marlins, SP Market, and Blue Jays Series

Newsroom

With less than a month remaining before the August 3 Trade Deadline, the latest MLB trade rumors have surfaced. Sandy Alcantara's name remains prominent, as the former NL Cy Young winner is a highly sought pitcher for teams aiming to strengthen their starting rotation. However, it appears that the Miami Marlins, currently one of baseball's hottest teams with a 16-4 record in their last 20 games, are planning to retain Alcantara and add strategically at the Deadline.

The Marlins have posted a 52-42 record, holding onto the third Wild Card spot in the National League, largely thanks to Alcantara's impressive performances, including a recent standout game of eight innings with just one run allowed against the Athletics on July 4. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Miami is also interested in acquiring a third baseman, a back-end starter, and a high-leverage reliever, potentially utilizing players from their Major League roster in those moves.

As teams around the league assess their needs, several franchises hold keys to the starting pitching market. Notably, Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers stands out as a desirable target. The two-time AL Cy Young Award winner is set to become a free agent at the season's end and has been performing effectively since returning from injury. His teammate, Casey Mize, another promising pitcher, also has the potential to be traded depending on how the Tigers fare in the coming weeks.

In Kansas City, the Royals have two veteran pitchers, Seth Lugo and Michael Wacha, that are under club control through 2028, which has led to high asking prices. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Angels have promising young starters under control through the same year, raising their attractiveness on the trade market.

The New York Mets find themselves in a position of deliberation regarding pitcher Clay Holmes, who has been suggested as a possible trade candidate due to the team's struggles this season. However, the Mets have not ruled out the possibility of an extension for Holmes, who has expressed interest in staying in New York long-term. Currently on the injured list with a fractured fibula, he is expected to progress positively with his recovery.

As the All-Star break approaches, many teams are vying for postseason spots. One highly anticipated series this weekend features the Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres. Both teams, having faced challenges this season, face significant implications for their trade strategies following this series. The Blue Jays, at 44-49, aim to strengthen their rotation while the Padres at 46-47 ponder the fate of All-Star closer Mason Miller depending on the results. Their future moves may hinge on the outcomes of their performance.
