Lyon Wins 18th Women's League Title, Defeating PSG

L'Olympique Lyonnais Féminin clinched its 18th French championship title, the fourth consecutive title, by defeating Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) 3-0 in the final of the Arkema Première Ligue on May 17, 2025, at home. Three goals from Melchie Dumornay, Kadidiatou Diani, and Wendie Renard cemented Lyon's victory.

The first half of the match was rather dull, with both teams assured of their places in next season's UEFA Champions League but wary of losing the final and finishing this season without silverware. Lyon finished the regular season unbeaten with 20 wins and 2 draws, outperforming PSG by ten points; they had previously beaten PSG twice, 1-0 and 2-0.

However, Lyon had faced early exits from both the Coupe de France, being eliminated by Reims on penalties, and the UEFA Champions League, where they lost to Arsenal. Winning the championship title was a crucial consolation for them.

Dumornay broke the deadlock in stoppage time in the first half with a right-footed shot following a well-coordinated play initiated on the left wing, assisted by American Lindsey Heaps. Kadidiatou Diani followed up with a goal in the 80th minute, extending Lyon's lead with a shot that was deflected by Paulina Dudek, reflecting Lyon's dominance in the second half.

In added time, captain Wendie Renard scored from a penalty, awarded with the assistance of VAR for a handball by Océane Hurtré. PSG, who lost to Paris FC on penalties in the Coupe de France final and struggled without Marie-Antoinette Katoto for most of the match, appeared ineffective.

The Parisian side finished a disappointing season without winning any titles. Their coach Fabrice Abriel was criticized for his management and was placed on leave right after the Coupe de France final, with Brazilian Paulo Cesar temporarily taking over. PSG will need to strengthen its squad for the upcoming UEFA Champions League season while Lyon is preparing for several departures, including star Eugénie Le Sommer, who played her last game for the club on Friday.
