Napoli's Smart Move: Rejecting PSG's Osimhen Bid

In a recent interview, former Napoli sporting director Mauro Meloso expressed his support for the club's decision to reject Paris Saint-Germain's bid for striker Victor Osimhen. Meloso highlighted that owner Aurelio De Laurentiis made the right call in not selling the Nigerian international, who played a vital role in Napoli's Scudetto triumph during the 2022/23 season.

Paris Saint-Germain had shown keen interest in acquiring Osimhen during the summer transfer window of 2023. The club even engaged in discussions with Osimhen's representatives regarding a potential move to the French capital. Reflecting on the situation, Meloso stated, "Should Osimhen and Kvara have been sold together to PSG immediately after their third Scudetto? At that point, De Laurentiis didn’t want to weaken Napoli." He emphasized that while it might seem easy to criticize the decision in hindsight, selling key players right after a championship win could send a negative message to the club and its supporters.

Meloso further elaborated, "It would have sent a terrible signal to the club after winning the Scudetto and losing Spalletti (the coach) and Guintoli (the sporting director)." He praised De Laurentiis for prioritizing the club's integrity over immediate financial gain, stating, "He refused for the good of Napoli, but there are some things that go well and others that don’t."
