Munster Defeats Lions to Advance to Play-offs

In the United Rugby Championship round 18, Munster triumphed over the Lions with a score of 24-17 at Thomond Park in Limerick, securing their place in the play-offs. This victory eliminated Ulster, who were finalists in the Challenge Cup, from the top eight standings.

Munster's win placed them fifth in the final league table, setting up an away match against the Bulls in the quarter-finals. The Lions, finishing in seventh, will face Leinster in their next match.

The hosts initially faced pressure from the Lions but quickly shifted play to their offensive end. Munster opened the scoring with a try from Evan O'Connell, following quick ball movement that brought them close to the posts. JJ Hanrahan, who replaced Jack Crowley at the last minute due to injury, converted the try and added two more conversions during the match.

The Lions responded when Quan Horn intercepted a long pass from Dan Kelly, racing in for their opening try. Hanrahan increased Munster's lead with a penalty kick after a breakdown foul by the Lions. Munster received their first yellow card when Andrew Smith was penalized for a knock-on. Shortly thereafter, Sean O'Brien also received a yellow card following a consultation with the television match official (TMO), temporarily reducing Munster to 13 players.

The Lions capitalized on their numerical advantage, with Kelly Mpeku scoring after a turnover. However, Munster clawed back to regain a three-point lead at halftime as Craig Casey scored from close range, with Hanrahan again successful with the conversion.

In the 54th minute, Munster extended their lead when Casey created a line break, leading to Tom Ahern scoring. Chris Smith's penalty brought the Lions closer, but Munster maintained their lead to secure a spot in the knockout stage of the competition.
