Novak Djokovic Faces Jeers in Victory Over Valentin Royer

Novak Djokovic faced jeers from the crowd during a challenging second-round match against home player Valentin Royer at the French Open. The third seed expressed his frustration with the crowd's noise during key points and between serves. After saving a critical break point in the fourth set, Djokovic shushed the home fans, which only elicited louder jeers in response.

The 39-year-old struggled with the afternoon heat on Court Philippe Chatrier, but ultimately prevailed with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (7), 6-3 after three hours and 44 minutes of play. "It’s a very important victory," Djokovic remarked. "The conditions are difficult for players. I had chances in the third set, and it was my fault because I was twice a break up. It's normal to have a few complications. I hope I won’t play against any other French players. That’s enough. I’ve played two matches and I feel like I’ve played two weeks."

Reflecting on his performance, Djokovic noted, "When I had a match point in the tie-break, I was too passive and he took advantage. It’s very, very hot, but I’m happy to get through."

Earlier in the tournament, Djokovic claimed his 30th consecutive victory over French players by defeating Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the first round, having dropped a set. He had a smooth start against Royer, looking to advance to the third round for the 21st consecutive year. Djokovic led by a break twice in the third set, but Royer, currently ranked 74 and seeking his first victory over a top-10 player, managed to draw level each time, subsequently saving a match point and winning the tie-break.

A single break in the fourth set proved to be sufficient for Djokovic, who faced additional challenges from Royer, who saved three more match points, one with an impressive half-volley. Djokovic next competes against Brazilian rising star Joao Fonseca, marking their first career meeting. Fonseca, 19, had an emotional victory in his previous match after coming back from two sets down against fellow young player Dino Prizmic, winning 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, 6-2.
