Ajayi, Adeshina Secure Bronze Medals for Nigeria

At the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Nigeria's athletics team faced challenging weather conditions but achieved significant success as Kanyinsola Ajayi and Temitope Adeshina both won bronze medals in their events. In the men's 100m final, Ajayi made history by becoming the first Nigerian male sprinter in two decades to earn a medal in this category, finishing third with a time of 9.90 seconds. The gold medal was claimed by Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme, who set a Games record of 9.83 seconds, while Australia's Lachlan Kennedy secured silver with a personal best of 9.85 seconds. Ajayi successfully fended off South Africa's Gift Leotlela to maintain his podium position, who crossed the line in fourth at 9.91 seconds.

Ajayi's bronze could be seen as a bittersweet outcome for the 20-year-old, given that he had previously won his semi-final heat in a notable 9.94 seconds despite the rainy conditions, qualifying easily for the final.

On the women's side, Temitope Adeshina also secured a bronze medal in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.90 meters. While she finished behind Australia’s Eleanor Patterson and Nicola Olyslagers, who both cleared 1.93 meters, Adeshina's achievement marks a significant improvement from her 10th-place finish during her Commonwealth Games debut four years prior.

This brace of bronze medals contributes to Nigeria's growing collection of accolades following an impressive start to the Games, particularly in para powerlifting and weightlifting over the opening days.
