Switzerland triumphs over Colombia in penalty shoot-out

Switzerland edged Colombia in a dramatic penalty shoot-out, advancing to the World Cup quarter-finals with a 4-3 victory after a goalless draw on Tuesday in Kansas City. The Swiss team will next face the defending champions, Argentina, who earlier defeated Egypt 3-2.

Switzerland's last appearance in a World Cup quarter-final was in 1954, when they hosted the tournament. The team played without young midfielder Johan Manzambi, who suffered an injury during training the day prior. Despite concerns, Ruben Vargas, who had been injured, came off the bench in stoppage time and converted the decisive penalty.

The contest remained tightly contested, showcasing contrasting styles—Switzerland's organized approach versus Colombia's attacking play. Colombian defender Davinson Sanchez's penalty hit the crossbar, while Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel saved an attempt from Cucho Hernandez, ensuring their advancement.

The match witnessed a passionate crowd at Arrowhead Stadium, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino in attendance. Colombia, who failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup, reached the quarter-finals in 2014 after defeating Uruguay in the round of 16 but were ultimately eliminated by the host nation, Brazil.

The encounter featured several pivotal moments. Gustavo Puerta had the first major chance for Colombia in the 21st minute, but Kobel deflected his long-range shot. Switzerland's best opportunity came from Fabian Reider, whose effort was saved by Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas.

In extra time, Jhon Lucumi’s header hit the crossbar, exemplifying the tension as both teams battled for control. Switzerland had a free kick in the 52nd minute, but Reider's shot curled around the wall, narrowly missing the goal. The two teams previously met in the group stage of the 1994 World Cup, where Colombia won 2-0.

With their determination and skill, Switzerland's national team celebrated a historic moment as they set sights on the upcoming clash with Argentina on Saturday.
