Switzerland's last appearance in a World Cup quarter-final was in 1954, when they hosted the tournament. The team played without young midfielder Johan Manzambi, who suffered an injury during training the day prior. Despite concerns, Ruben Vargas, who had been injured, came off the bench in stoppage time and converted the decisive penalty.

The contest remained tightly contested, showcasing contrasting styles—Switzerland's organized approach versus Colombia's attacking play.
