UK Government Urges Fifa to Investigate Argentina over Banner

The UK government has backed calls for Fifa to investigate whether Argentina players broke rules by displaying a banner in support of their country’s claim to the Falkland Islands during the World Cup. This support from Downing Street followed a 2-1 victory by Argentina over England in a match held in Atlanta on July 15, 2026.

Business Secretary Peter Kyle emphasized that Fifa should thoroughly probe the actions of the defending champions, with Downing Street echoing those sentiments. A spokesperson stated: "The World Cup might not be ours, but the Falkland Islands definitely are. Our commitment to the Falklands will never waver." While any potential action is up to Fifa, the spokesperson indicated that the Prime Minister agrees with calls for an investigation. When asked about Downing Street’s alignment with Kyle’s description of the incident as an "egregious violation" of the rules, the spokesperson noted that any consequences would be a matter for Fifa to decide.

Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey called for the immediate suspension of the Argentina players seen holding the banner during the semi-final. According to Article 34.3 of the tournament’s rules, displaying any political messages or slogans by players before, during, or after a match is prohibited. In the past, Argentina faced fines from Fifa for similar actions, including an incident in 2014 when players showcased a banner in a friendly match against Slovenia.

Amid the controversy, England football legend Gary Lineker criticized coach Thomas Tuchel’s tactics in the aftermath of England's exit, labeling them as "unfathomable." Tuchel accepted blame for the defeat but expressed that he had "no regrets." The Football Association (FA) has reportedly backed Tuchel following the team's exit from the World Cup.
