Sporting Lagos Coach Buter Fined N500,000 Over Referee Comments

Sporting Lagos head coach Jeffrey Buter was fined N500,000 and cautioned by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) due to comments he made about refereeing after the Lagos derby against Ikorodu City. The league imposed this sanction after Buter appeared before a disciplinary panel on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, to explain his remarks following Sporting Lagos' goalless draw with Ikorodu City on September 30, 2026.

During the panel hearing, the coach admitted he was wrong to have made those statements in his post-match press interview. This acknowledgment contributed to the relatively lenient punishment decided by the NPFL. Buter’s statements drew scrutiny, leading the league to summon him for clarification after the match.

In his comments, Buter had questioned the quality of officiating and expressed concern that refereeing decisions were becoming problematic within the league. The NPFL responded to these remarks with a warning to refrain from public statements that could bring the league and its match officials into disrepute. After the hearing, the NPFL confirmed that Buter recognized his error during the press interview.

The league indicated that his admission of wrongdoing, along with his limited experience as a coach in the NPFL during the 2026/27 season, influenced their decision to impose a N500,000 fine instead of a harsher penalty. Alongside the financial sanction, Buter was cautioned about future public commentary on the NPFL and its referees.

The NPFL has given the Sporting Lagos coach seven working days to pay the fine, emphasizing that failure to comply might result in more severe penalties. Additionally, this case served as a reminder to all coaches and club officials in the league about the importance of exercising restraint when discussing the competition publicly. The NPFL urged participants to use established dispute resolution mechanisms for any grievances rather than airing complaints through public forums.

In conclusion, while the N500,000 fine resolves the disciplinary actions related to Buter’s comments, the NPFL has made it clear that it expects future criticisms to be substantiated and appropriately channeled rather than openly expressed.
