Toyota Challenge Expands for 2026 Season

The upcoming 2026 Toyota Challenge is set to be the most ambitious yet, featuring an expanded format that includes international teams. The Toyota Cheetahs, Suzuki Griquas, and Airlink Pumas will compete against three international touring sides: Black Lion from Georgia, Portugal, and Romania ‘A’. This year’s tournament promises to deliver thrilling rugby action and valuable international exposure for South African teams.

Scheduled to kick off in June, the first leg of the competition will take place at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein on June 5, 10, and 14. The tournament is particularly significant as all three visiting nations have qualified for the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. Georgia and Romania will be in the same group as South Africa, while Portugal returns to Bloemfontein after a memorable match against the Springboks in 2024.

Mark Alexander, President of SA Rugby, emphasized the importance of this competition for both the visiting teams and the South African sides. He stated, "This competition provides Portugal, Georgia, and Romania with the important high-performance preparation required as they build towards the Rugby World Cup. Equally, the tournament offers the Cheetahs, Pumas, and Griquas invaluable international exposure."

The format of the tournament has been designed to create a festival atmosphere, with multiple matches scheduled on each day. This year marks the first time that the Griquas and Pumas will join the Cheetahs in the Toyota Challenge, adding to the excitement. Both teams have had recent success, winning the SA Cup and the Carling Currie Cup, and their participation is expected to elevate the competition.

Rian Oberholzer, CEO of SA Rugby, noted that the Toyota Challenge was launched in 2021 to provide meaningful international competition for the Cheetahs outside the Vodacom URC environment. He expressed enthusiasm for the expanded format, which will now include more teams and matches, enhancing the overall experience for players and fans alike.

The tournament will not only feature high-caliber rugby but also crowd activations, giveaways, family-friendly zones, and live entertainment, making it a comprehensive event for all attendees. Rory Duncan, CEO of the Free State Cheetahs, highlighted the unique energy and excitement that the new format brings, stating, "It creates a true festival for rugby for both players and fans."

Leon Theron, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Toyota South Africa Motors, reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting the tournament, emphasizing that the Toyota Challenge embodies resilience and performance. The involvement of international teams is expected to raise the standard of rugby and provide a world-class experience for fans.

The tournament is seen as a significant opportunity for the participating nations to prepare for the upcoming World Cup. Mr. Davit Katcharava, President of the Georgian Rugby Union, expressed gratitude for the opportunity, stating that it aligns with their objectives for Black Lion. Similarly, Mr. Carlos Amado da Silva, President of the Portuguese Rugby Federation, noted that participating in the Toyota Challenge is crucial for developing their players in a competitive environment.

As the tournament approaches, excitement is building for what promises to be a landmark event in the rugby calendar. The fixtures are set, and fans can look forward to an exhilarating showcase of international rugby in Bloemfontein this June.
