FIA Investigates Rock Incident at WRC Acropolis Rally
Newsroom

The FIA and the Acropolis Rally Greece organizers opened an investigation after a rock hit and shattered the windscreen of WRC2 podium contender Alejandro Cachon. Cachon was driving his Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 during the final test of Friday's event, Special Stage 7 (Thiva), when the incident occurred. The rock struck the windscreen, causing it to break on the co-driver's side. Witnesses noted that the rock seemed to come from the side of the stage in a straight section of the gravel track.
Cachon described the moment during an interview at the end of the stage, stating, "I hope not but it seems like someone threw something, because it was in the middle of a straight, so I don’t know, it was a scare." He later took to social media to express his frustration, noting that despite being in third place in WRC2, the situation could have turned disastrous. "The whole team works very hard and [co-driver] Borja Rozada and I give our very best so that someone ruins the work of so many people like this. I hope that if this wasn’t accidental, you don’t step on another stage," he wrote.
The FIA released a statement confirming the investigation, saying, "During Special Stage 7 (Thiva) of the EKO Acropolis Rally, Car No. 24 sustained a shattered windscreen after being hit by a rock along the stage route. The FIA and the event organizer are currently investigating the cause of the incident."
Despite the shattered windscreen, Cachon managed to set the fastest WRC2 time in the stage, finishing Friday in third place, 31.4 seconds behind WRC2 leader Andreas Mikkelsen.
