LeBron James affirms his stance in GOAT debate

LeBron James addressed the ongoing debate regarding the greatest basketball player of all time (GOAT) in a recent interview with Time. As he approaches the end of his illustrious NBA career, James asserted, "I'm not taking nobody over me," indicating his belief in his own greatness.

During the interview, published on June 10, 2026, James acknowledged the opinions of other NBA legends, including Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, noting that they likely consider themselves the GOAT as well. "But I think Mike will say the same thing," he stated. James went on to mention other greats like Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Shaquille O'Neal, Wilt Chamberlain, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, asserting that none of these players would choose someone over themselves in the debate.

He emphasized, "If there's a general manager and he's eyeballing all of us on a baseline, with the No. 1 pick, it's gonna be hard not to take me, champ." James also commented on whether he views himself as a more influential athlete than Jordan, stating that responses would vary based on the generation of the individual asked. He noted, "You ask somebody that grew up in the Jordan era, they're gonna say Jordan. You ask somebody who grew up in the LeBron era... they're still gonna say Jordan."

James expressed respect for differing opinions, affirming, "I never step my feet in another man's shoes... My journey is my journey. I do what I do." He acknowledged his contributions to basketball and his influence, stating, "I know what I've brought to the table. From a basketball standpoint, an inspiring standpoint, an influential standpoint, I know I can walk in any room."

As James's career may be nearing its conclusion, he mentioned that he would become an unrestricted free agent this summer, expressing uncertainty about retirement or possibly extending his career for an unprecedented 24th season with the Los Angeles Lakers or another team. "It's up to the mind," he said. "Where the mind goes, the body will lay. When I'm not in love with getting to the arenas on game days... then I know I'll be done."
