Son Emphasizes Importance of Every World Cup Match

Newsroom

South Korean captain Son Heung-min disclosed that every World Cup match is crucial, indicating that the team will be willing to stake their lives on it. South Korea faced the Czech Republic in the opening fixture of Group A on Saturday, June 11, 2026.

Approaching his fourth World Cup, Son noted that he treats each game with absolute focus and excitement akin to his very first tournament. "The guys are so fired-up for this match, and I actually have to calm them down," Son stated at the pre-match press conference in Guadalajara. He expressed hope that their hard work would yield results, conveying a sense of anticipation. "The vibe is tremendous, and I can feel it from the eyes of my teammates."

Son emphasized the significance of every World Cup match, stating, "Every World Cup match is so important that, as a player, you would stake your life on it. Tomorrow, we will give everything we’ve got and more."

He mentioned that his mindset remains consistent, whether it’s his first or last World Cup, saying that he feels like a child again. “I have never once said this is my last World Cup. The most important thing is to do my job. People can say whatever they want, and I will choose my path wisely.”

South Korea's upcoming matches include a game against Mexico on June 18 and a final Group A match against South Africa on June 24.
