Yamamoto leads Dodgers to eighth straight loss for Padres

Newsroom

Yoshinobu Yamamoto struck out 10 in seven innings, and the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres 3-0 on Saturday night, extending the Padres' losing streak to eight games. Yamamoto, who improved his season record to 9-5, matched a season high with his 10 strikeouts while allowing just three hits. This victory marked his second win against the Padres in eight days.

Freddie Freeman contributed significantly to the win, hitting a home run and driving in two RBIs, as the Dodgers secured their 10th win in 12 games, including five victories against the Padres. The Dodgers now have a 7-2 record against San Diego for the season.

The Padres' opening pitcher, Wandy Peralta, managed a scoreless inning, but Griffin Canning (1-6) gave up one run in four innings while striking out four batters. San Diego's loss marked the first time the team had lost eight consecutive games since a 10-game losing streak in 2013. Recently, the Padres dropped the first game of the four-game series after blowing a six-run lead on Thursday and a three-run lead on Friday.

Andy Pages, shortly after earning his first All-Star Game selection, began the scoring with a one-out single in the third inning that brought in Dalton Rushing for a 1-0 lead. Freeman then extended the lead to 2-0 in the sixth inning with his 15th home run off Padres left-hander Kyle Hart, maintaining his streak of reaching base in 19 consecutive games. Will Klein closed the game for the Dodgers in the ninth inning, securing his second save of the season despite Padres closer Mason Miller, who was named an All-Star on Sunday, allowing an RBI single to Freeman in the eighth inning.

Looking ahead, the Padres were set to start left-handed pitcher JP Sears (1-1, 6.97 ERA) against right-hander Emmet Sheehan (4-5, 5.08 ERA) on Sunday in the series finale.
